IHN/APRIL SHOWERS UPDATE: December, 2006
News and Notes:
We end the year with an upward swing. More guests are coming for lunch only - perhaps a sign of a shifting demographic. Guest totals that used to be extraordinary are now the norm. To meet the challenge, more volunteers than ever are coming to Showers - more than 30 each time. All of that translates into more good spirit swirling about the Boys and Girls Club. And that good spirit seems to have swirled out into the city as well. The EveryOne Home plan has been passed, and a first-of-its-kind Thanksgiving dinner was held for our homeless brothers and sisters - all in all, quite a year. Now we begin the New Year with hope and expectation of a brighter future for all.

IHN/APRIL SHOWERS UPDATE: November, 2006
News and Notes: There is much to be thankful for during this holiday season. The incredible outpouring of affection for our homeless neighbors at the Thanksgiving dinner graciously hosted by San Leandro Community Church lit the hearts of all in attendance. I say "incredible", but this is in fact standard fare in the IHN community. One more round of thanks to Gene Bass, everyone at SLCC, and the Pershings.
Also, the San Leandro City Council endorsed the EveryOne Home plan to end chronic homelessness in Alameda County.
That IHN good spirit was in evidence throughout these last months of meetings and played a role in the positive council vote.
And Primo got his job! Primo is a butcher once again and sends his thanks to everyone for their supportive prayers.

IHN/APRIL SHOWERS UPDATE: October, 2006
News and Notes:
There’s lots to talk about, and first things first. Primo is going for a job interview at Safeway as a butcher. Linda got a job with a transport company. Steve is going after a job driving truck for Mother’s Cookies, with an eye on starting a barbecue business. Good folks making a good effort. The entire April Showers community lends support.
A very important San Leandro City Council meeting will be held Monday, November 20th at 7:00 pm. The council will vote on the “EveryOne Home Plan” – the plan to end chronic homelessness in AlamedaCounty. You are encouraged to contact your local council representative and/or attend the meeting to show your support for this plan.
All Saints Episcopal will begin its First Saturday Soup Stop on December 2nd. Soup and sandwich for the homeless will be served in the All Saints parish hall at 911 Dowling. Flyers will be at April Showers to inform our guests.

IHN/APRIL SHOWERS UPDATE:
New Guest Census High
Seventy people came to the April Shower event on September 3, 2006 setting a new census high. Our previous high was 62 people on July 2nd. The people at St. Peter’s Lutheran prepared and brought 60 lunches so guests arriving late in the day meant having some soup but no bag lunch to take as they left. Our bag lunch committees from six of our churches will now be given a new number of lunches to prepare. They know the program is growing. We are so grateful for the lunch makers and for the people who tell Jeannie O’ that they will make a pot of soup.
Twenty-seven volunteers served by handing out supplies, preparing the used clothing for selection, in the men and women’s shower rooms, issuing laundry vouchers and in the lunchroom.
There were six people who had come for the first time. Each of them had learned about the showers from a friend who was coming for a shower.
Special thanks to the volunteers who served these seventy guests.

IHN/APRIL SHOWERS UPDATE:
July, 2006 News and Notes:
July was a record-breaking month for the April Showers program. On July 2nd, we had an all-time high of 62 guests. At the next Showers, we hit our previous record, and then exceeded that by one at the following Showers. Volunteers have kept pace. A record high 38 welcoming souls provided fellowship and service on July 16. We are both happy to be of help and sad that so many are in need.
There continues to be movement from the city regarding the issue of homelessness. The San Leandro Human Services Commission has voted to endorse a new proposal called the Alameda Countywide Homeless and Special Needs Housing Plan. SL City Council will meet to discuss this proposal on September 21. This is heartening news indeed.
Note that there will be a volunteer meeting on Monday, August 28, 7:00 to 8:30 at First United Methodist Church. We will discuss the survey process we have been going through and share some early results.

IHN/APRIL SHOWERS UPDATE: APRIL-JUNE, 2006
News and Notes:
Much has happened since the last report. Most recent news is that we're on the web! Content is still being put together, but check it out at www.ihnaprilshowers.org. Many thanks to Gene Bass for making this happen.
Other recent news is the survey being conducted at Showers. The goals are to capture the stories of our guests and better learn their needs, and compile data with the hope of securing funding to meet those needs. A further note is that the San Leandro Human Resources Commission invited us to speak at a meeting and is very interested in the results of our survey. We are too! The process itself has been profound. We are honored by the trust bestowed by our guests.
As we listen to our guests’ stories, we are learning that many of them are long-term residents of San Leandro. What they want most are work, shelter, and a continuation of the hospitality received at April Showers.

Guest Census Hits New High
Our July 2, 2006 April Shower event served 62 people. Our previous high was 57 on January 15th, 2006.
Our volunteer team deserves our praise for keeping things moving so that our guests were able to have a hot shower and shampoo. Dressing in new underwear and then perhaps some outerwear selected from donated used clothing we offer, allowed them to leave feeling much better than when they arrived.
The Lunchroom crew went all out. Several guests said, “The food is always good, but this lunch is fantastic. There were hamburgers and hot dogs, with fixings. Macaroni salad, Jello salad, potato salad, beans and cake for dessert were offered. On the beverage table water, lemonade and punch were available. There were pastries and coffee, as usual.
As Volunteer Coordinator, I wanted to send out special thanks to the 27 Volunteers who made the July 2nd Shower event so successful.
